No matter your skin type: When it comes to anti-aging, retinol is a must. A high-quality retinol serum can refine skin texture and visibly improve the appearance of wrinkles. This transformation was documented in an independent TV test on ProSieben Taff and SAT.1 Frühstücksfernsehen: The test subject consistently used our retinol serum for three months—and there was a significant improvement in wrinkle depth, both visually and based on measurable skin parameters . As a beginner, she started her retinol routine with Retinol Sensitive. After the adjustment period, she switched to the higher-concentration Retinol Intense to further enhance her results.

Retinol is also an effective ally when it comes to achieving a more even skin tone . This customer was initially hesitant to use retinol because her skin is more sensitive and she had no prior experience with the active ingredient. However, Retinol Sensitive is very well tolerated, even by beginners, and helped her improve pigmentation spots in two ways: First, by accelerating cell renewal, and second, by reducing the accumulation of oxidative damage—one of the main triggers of dark spots. This transformation shows how even stubborn discoloration visibly diminished and how the skin appears fresher and more youthful overall. The customer also used the Vit C + Spilanthol Serum in the morning and the Purifying Power Serum in the evening.

Dr. Luise Berger

Here's what the founder says

With many years of experience in the fashion and beauty industry, I can tell you this: “One size fits all” doesn’t work with retinol. It’s not for nothing that retinol is considered the gold standard in skin rejuvenation. But not all retinol is created equal. There are enormous differences in effectiveness and tolerability. Many products fail as early as the development stage: unclear concentrations, unstable packaging, irritating additives. Dr. Berger analyzed the market with the precision of a surgeon and, based on that analysis, developed her own retinol formulations—highly stable, precisely dosed, and with a clean, well-tolerated base. Retinol Sensitive is the ideal retinol serum for beginners or for people with sensitive or dry skin. Thanks to its combination with bakuchiol and NovoRetin™ , this retinol serum can reach its full potential while remaining exceptionally well-tolerated.

OUR COMMITMENT

What sets DOC BERGER EFFECT active-ingredient cosmetics apart?

20 years of experience as a medical specialist. In every formula.

Dr. Luise Berger develops every single formulation herself. As a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery, she has been working with skin and its aging processes on a daily basis for over 20 years. This knowledge is incorporated into every formulation—with the goal of sustainably maintaining and specifically improving skin quality.

Clean. No compromises. Made in Germany.

It’s not enough for us to simply avoid individual controversial ingredients. Doc Berger Effect is always free of: alcohols, silicone oils, paraffins, PEGs/PPGs, parabens, microplastics, nanoparticles, dyes, fragrances suspected of causing allergies, and questionable UV filters. This makes the development process significantly more complex—but for you, we’ll keep tinkering until we find a way to do it without them. After all, the skin is our largest organ—and what we apply to it every day matters. Developed and manufactured in Germany.

A wide variety of active ingredients in the highest concentrations

Not just one key active ingredient—but over 100 active ingredients derived from nature and biotechnology research, precisely balanced to work together. Formulated at the highest concentrations and designed as a skincare system: for more active ingredients per milliliter and products that complement one another.

FAQs

For beginners, even a low concentration of retinol (0.01–0.3%) is enough to stimulate skin cell renewal. What matters isn’t “a lot,” but rather “regular use and skin compatibility.” A gently formulated serum with a low dose of retinol, combined with soothing active ingredients, is ideal for getting started.

If you're new to retinol, it's best to incorporate it into your evening routine gradually. Start with just a few applications per week on clean, dry skin, and follow up with a moisturizer. This allows your skin to gradually adjust to the active ingredient and get the most out of its regenerative benefits.

The 3-2-1 rule describes a gradual increase in application frequency: In Week 1, retinol is applied every 3 nights; in Week 2, every 2 nights; and starting in Week 3, every night. The frequency can be adjusted individually depending on how your skin feels. It’s important to always use consistent sun protection during the day, as retinol makes the skin more sensitive to light. We highly recommend our Four Seasons Day Cream with SPF 50+.

For beginners, a precisely formulated retinol serum is most effective—followed by a suitable moisturizer. We recommend using our Ultra Rich Night Cream or Time Machine after applying the retinol serum.

For beginners, low-dose retinol is clearly a better choice. Retinal (retinaldehyde) acts much faster and more intensely, since it is only one conversion step away from active retinoic acid. As a result, it can more easily overwhelm the skin and is often too strong for sensitive skin or skin that is not used to retinol. Retinol, on the other hand, is converted into its active form more slowly. This delayed activation makes its effects more controlled and easier to manage, allowing the skin to gradually adjust to it. Mildly formulated retinol is therefore the safer and more sensible long-term choice for those new to retinoid skincare.

Retinol should always be applied in the evening. The active ingredient is sensitive to light and ideally exerts its regenerative effect overnight, when the skin is in its natural repair mode. In addition, UV radiation breaks down retinol more quickly, which would reduce its effectiveness in the morning. For both beginners and experts, applying it once in the evening is perfectly sufficient.

The skin usually needs at least 2–4 weeks to adjust to retinol. During this time, cell renewal is gradually stimulated. Slowly increasing the frequency of application helps the skin adapt optimally.

Yes, bakuchiol and retinol complement each other very well in a formulation. While retinol specifically stimulates cell renewal and collagen production, bakuchiol also provides antioxidant and skin-soothing benefits. This combination is particularly beneficial for beginners or those with sensitive skin, as bakuchiol can help improve tolerability. At the same time, experienced users also benefit from this combination because bakuchiol gently intensifies retinol’s cell-renewing and smoothing effects.

There is no “better” or “worse”—both active ingredients have different strengths. Bakuchiol is considered a plant-based, particularly gentle alternative to retinol. It can help improve skin texture and elasticity, but it works more slowly and less intensely. Retinol has been much more extensively studied and is considered the gold standard in anti-aging skincare, as it specifically promotes collagen production and cell renewal. However, high-dose retinol can be “too strong” for many people or lead to an initial worsening of symptoms or side effects. For dry or sensitive skin, therefore, combinations of low-dose retinol and bakuchiol-like active ingredients are particularly beneficial.

Yes, bakuchiol can help visibly reduce fine lines and wrinkles. This plant-based active ingredient supports collagen production, which can make the skin appear smoother and plumper. At the same time, it improves elasticity, so that the skin’s contours appear firmer and more toned. Thanks to its antioxidant properties, bakuchiol also helps protect the skin from environmental aging. It has a soothing and nourishing effect and is particularly well-suited for demanding, sensitive, or dry skin. Since bakuchiol is gentler than retinol, it works gradually and is ideal as a nourishing anti-aging ingredient—either on its own or in combination with retinol for maximum efficacy.

Novoretin is not a traditional retinol, but rather a modern, retinol-like active ingredient of plant origin. It supports skin renewal in a similar way to retinol, but is considered to be particularly well-tolerated and is extracted from the resin of the mastic tree on the Greek island of Chios.

Green tea is rich in antioxidants and helps protect the skin from free radicals and environmental stress. In addition, green tea has antibacterial properties and can help reduce blemishes and redness, giving the skin a clearer overall appearance. As a result, it supports skin health and makes the formula suitable for all skin types and a gentle introduction to retinol skincare.

Retinol doesn’t work overnight—but its effects are long-lasting. Initial changes, such as a fresher complexion, may become visible after about 3–4 weeks. During this time, cell renewal is stimulated, and the skin begins to feel smoother and more even. More noticeable effects on skin texture, pore appearance, and wrinkles usually become apparent after 8–12 weeks of regular use. Since retinol supports collagen production over the long term, skin quality continues to improve steadily. Patience pays off: Retinol is one of the few active ingredients whose results actually become even more pronounced over time.

Yes, a mild retinol formula like Retinol Sensitive can also be used in the summer. It’s important to use sunscreen consistently during the day, as retinol can make the skin more sensitive to light. This way, the skin remains protected while also benefiting from the regenerative effects.

Yes, even dry skin can benefit from retinol. It’s not just the active ingredient itself that matters, but the overall formulation. Modern, clean-formulated retinol serums combine the active ingredient with soothing and moisturizing ingredients that help keep the skin supple and strengthen its protective barrier. This allows retinol to deliver its skin-renewing and texture-improving benefits without unnecessarily stressing the skin. It’s also important to follow up with a rich moisturizer to lock in moisture. When used correctly, retinol can help even dry skin achieve greater smoothness, evenness, and firmness.

It is recommended to avoid retinol during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Plant-based active ingredients such as bakuchiol and NovoRetin™ are considered popular alternatives.

Yes, thinner skin in particular can benefit from retinol’s collagen-stimulating effects. At first, retinol can promote the shedding of superficial, keratinized skin cells, which may cause the skin to feel slightly thinner or more sensitive for a short time. In the long term, however, retinol has been proven to support collagen production in deeper layers of the skin, which strengthens the skin’s structure and can make the skin appear more resilient and firmer overall.

How to Use DOC BERGER EFFECT Retinol Sensitive – a gentle retinol serum with bakuchiol for sensitive skin that supports cell renewal and provides long-term relief from wrinkles, fine lines, loss of skin firmness, and uneven skin texture.

Retinol for Sensitive Skin

A gentle introduction to retinol—without overwhelming your skin

Retinol Sensitive was developed specifically for sensitive, dry skin or skin that is not yet accustomed to retinol. Instead of irritating the skin with a treatment that’s too intense right from the start, the formula focuses on controlled skin renewal with high tolerability. This allows even those new to retinol to benefit from one of the most effective anti-aging ingredients—with less risk of dryness, tightness, and redness.

Retinol for Sensitive Skin

Retinol + Plant-Based Retinol Alternatives for Smoother Skin

Retinol supports cell renewal and can improve skin texture, fine lines, and unevenness over the long term. Bakuchiol and NovoRetin, two plant-based retinol boosters, complement this effect in a way that’s especially gentle on the skin and support regeneration without stressing the skin. Soothing and moisturizing active ingredients further strengthen the skin barrier and help alleviate typical side effects associated with getting used to retinol. Glamour named it the “Best Well-Tolerated Retinol Serum” in an article featuring the top-rated retinol products.

DOC BERGER EFFECT Retinol Sensitive – Retinol serum with bakuchiol for sensitive skin, designed for targeted anti-aging care, to support skin renewal, and to reduce wrinkles, fine lines, and uneven skin texture.

Retinol for Sensitive Skin

Step by Step Toward Visibly Better Skin Quality

Retinol does not produce immediate results; rather, it is an active ingredient that requires consistency and patience. With regular use, the skin may appear smoother, more even, and more resilient over time, while fine lines and a rough skin texture gradually fade into the background. Retinol Sensitive can be used year-round and is ideal for anyone who wants to gently introduce their skin to retinol and benefit from its anti-aging effects in the long term.

Your skin tells your story—let it be a story of love.

Retinol for Sensitive Skin: A Gentle Introduction with Visible Results

Retinol is considered the gold standard in anti-aging skincare—but not every skin type can tolerate high-dose formulations right away. This is exactly where Retinol Sensitive comes in: a modern, low-dose retinol skincare product developed specifically for sensitive, dry, or retinol-inexperienced skin (“retinol beginners”). Instead of overwhelming the skin, Retinol Sensitive helps the skin gradually adjust to retinoids and combines effective skin renewal with plant-based, soothing care.

How does mild retinol work for beginners?

Even at low doses, retinol delivers its anti-aging benefits—only in a more controlled and particularly gentle way:

• Gently promotes cell renewal—for a smoother, fresher complexion
• Supports collagen production – helps visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines
• Refines the appearance of pores – especially on the forehead, nose, and chin
• Evens out skin tone – pigment spots appear more uniform
• Long-term strengthening of the skin’s structure – for greater elasticity and resilience

Especially at first, your skin may feel slightly drier or become more sensitive. This isn't a bad thing—it's a sign that retinol is working and stimulating skin renewal. With a little patience and a gradual adjustment period, your skin will return to normal.

Why Retinol Sensitive Is a Better Choice for Beginners

Sensitive or dry skin needs more than just one active ingredient—it needs a supportive environment. That’s why Retinol Sensitive combines retinol with soothing, antioxidant, and barrier-strengthening ingredients. These help the skin:

• Retain moisture
• Reduce redness
• Reduce oxidative stress
• Stabilize the skin barrier

This way, retinol isn't a burden, but rather a controlled step toward smoother, more even skin.

Bakuchiol and NovoRetin™— two plant-based retinol boosters

At the heart of our Retinol Sensitive formula are bakuchiol and NovoRetin™. Both are plant-derived and support retinol’s skin-renewing effects in a particularly gentle way that works in harmony with the skin.

Bakuchiol is derived from the seeds of the babchi plant (Psoralea corylifolia). This active ingredient is known to support collagen production, improve skin elasticity, and reduce the appearance of fine lines. At the same time, bakuchiol has antioxidant and soothing properties, which help keep the skin balanced during retinol treatment.

NovoRetin™ is a plant-based active ingredient derived from mastic—a natural resin from Chios, Greece. Mastic is traditionally known for its skin-soothing, strengthening, and regenerative properties. In skincare, NovoRetin™ helps refine the skin’s texture, support the skin barrier, and make the complexion appear calmer and more balanced overall.

How to Use: A Gentle Introduction to Retinol Skincare

A gradual adjustment is the key:

Week 1: Apply every 3 evenings
Week 2: Apply every other evening
Starting in Week 3: Apply daily in the evening if well tolerated

Retinol is generally applied in the evening, since the skin works in repair mode overnight. During the day, it’s important to use a high SPF to provide optimal protection for the skin. Here, we recommend a day cream with reliable UV protection, such as our Four Seasons Day Cream with SPF 50+.
