What exactly are active-ingredient cosmetics?
“Active-ingredient cosmetics” refers to skincare products enriched with active, highly concentrated ingredients. From antioxidants and vitamins to peptides and hyaluronic acid—these active ingredients are designed to improve skin health and deliver visible, scientifically proven results. When developing her active-ingredient cosmetics, Dr. Luise Berger places the utmost importance on using only active ingredients of the highest quality and purity. Each of our formulations is carefully developed to ensure that active ingredient concentrations fall within the optimal therapeutic range, with many of our concentrations even sitting right at the legally mandated maximum limits.
DOC BERGER EFFECT's active-ingredient cosmetics stand out from other skincare products thanks to three key elements:
1) Beauty Through Science in Active-Ingredient Cosmetics
At DOC BERGER EFFECT, we combine beauty with science. Our guiding principle, “Beauty Through Science,” is reflected in each of our formulations. Years of research and a deep understanding of the science behind effective skincare solutions enable us to create products that deliver real results.
In the world of active-ingredient cosmetics, ingredients such as retinol, ectoin, resveratrol, vitamin C, panthenol, Juvinity, Argireline, and hyaluronic acid play a crucial role. These active ingredients are known for their wide-ranging benefits for the skin—from anti-aging effects and improved skin barrier function to boosting skin hydration and reducing blemishes. The scientific foundation of our active ingredient-based skincare allows us to precisely address the diverse needs of your skin.
At DOC BERGER EFFECT, we go one step further by using these high-tech active ingredients in the highest concentrations.
With DOC.BERGER I EFFECT, you can be sure that you’re always at the forefront of innovation in active-ingredient skincare, because to achieve the best possible results, we not only combine innovative active ingredients in optimal concentrations but also rely on the latest technologies and findings from dermatological research.
2) The DOC.BERGER I EFFECT Cream Base in Active Ingredient Cosmetics
The world of skincare is full of groundbreaking innovations and highly effective ingredients. But even the best active ingredients are useless if they don’t reach the areas where they’re needed. This is where our special cream base with phosphatidylcholine (PC) comes into play: This molecule acts as a penetration enhancer, designed to optimize bioavailability and the absorption of active ingredients into the skin. Phosphatidylcholine/lecithin is a natural component of our cell membranes and therefore plays a crucial role in the absorption and distribution of nutrients within our cells. Dr. Berger recognized the exceptional properties of phosphatidylcholine and incorporates it into DOC BERGER EFFECT products so that the active ingredients can unfold their full potential.
Why is phosphatidylcholine so effective?
The key lies in the structure of phosphatidylcholine (PC). PC consists of a water-loving (hydrophilic) head and two water-repellent (lipophilic) tails. This unique structure allows phosphatidylcholine to seamlessly integrate into the skin’s lipid layers and improve nutrient absorption. Another advantage of phosphatidylcholine is its excellent tolerability. Since PC is a natural component of our cells, the skin recognizes DOC BERGER EFFECT products enriched with phosphatidylcholine as part of the body’s own makeup. Phosphatidylcholine thus settles into small cracks and “holes,” helping to rebuild the skin barrier and reduce moisture loss, irritation, tightness, or sensitivity.
Modern skincare is increasingly moving away from conventional oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsions and instead using cream bases that better mimic the skin’s natural structure. Liposome and nanoparticle technologies that use phosphatidylcholine play a crucial role in this. They enable formulations that mimic the skin’s lamellar structure and form a tight bond with the lipid bilayers of the skin barrier.
While conventional creams containing emulsifiers can contribute to dryness and increased moisture loss, these innovative cream formulations enable optimal absorption of active ingredients without causing the so-called “washout effect”—that is, the washing away of valuable ingredients from the skin.
As a result, DOC.BERGER I EFFECT active-ingredient cosmetics represent a skincare approach that promotes lasting improvements while simultaneously providing preventive protection for intact and healthy skin.
3) Clean Beauty in Active-Ingredient Cosmetics: Less Is More
In the skincare industry, active-ingredient cosmetics are experiencing a boom because more and more customers are looking for products that are not only effective but also safe. A clear trend toward “clean beauty” is emerging—toward products made without controversial ingredients and thus considered “clean” or “pure” cosmetics.
Strictly speaking, however, clean beauty is not a trend but a movement that stands for a more conscious approach to ingredients and the environment. DOC BERGER EFFECT plays a pioneering role in this context by setting the highest standards for clean beauty and proving that less is indeed more. With clean beauty, the focus is not on the ingredients included, but rather on what is deliberately left out. Our goal is to develop skincare products that, as far as possible, consistently avoid ingredients that are irritating, suspected of causing allergies, hormonally active, or harmful to the environment.
That is why all of our skin care products are deliberately formulated without a long list of additives that are the subject of critical debate in the cosmetics industry.
What is NOT included in our Clean Beauty products?
Often used in skin care products as a solvent or to improve the skin's feel, alcohol can weaken the skin barrier, dry out the skin, and cause irritation in people with sensitive skin.
Both artificial and natural fragrances can often trigger skin allergies and irritation, especially in people with sensitive or dry skin, which can lead to redness and itching. The labeling requirement for certain fragrances is intended to protect consumers who are sensitive to these ingredients.
Artificial dyes can trigger allergic reactions and are particularly problematic for people with sensitive skin. In addition, the production and disposal of certain synthetic dyes have been criticized for being harmful to the environment.
Parabens—which include methyl, ethyl, isobutyl, butyl, and propyl parabens—are used as preservatives in many cosmetic products to inhibit bacterial growth. However, their use is controversial because they have hormone-like effects in the body and may potentially disrupt the endocrine system.
Polyethylene glycol, better known as PEG/PPG, is used as an emulsifier in many skincare products and allows water and oil to be mixed together to create a uniform consistency. However, PEG can make the skin more permeable and increase the risk of harmful ingredients entering the body. From an environmental perspective, PEG is particularly concerning because it is derived from petroleum and thus has negative impacts on the climate and oceans that are already well documented.
As a petroleum derivative, paraffin can clog pores and hinder the skin's ability to breathe. It forms an occlusive layer on the skin that, while it locks in moisture, can also trap harmful substances.
Small plastic particles, which are used in many day creams, night creams, serums, exfoliants, and other cosmetic products, can not only harm the marine environment but also disrupt the food chain, as they are ingested by marine life.
Although they are of natural origin, essential oils can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in some people. Their high concentration requires careful handling.
Silicones are commonly found in skin care and hair care products and can be identified by the suffixes “-cone” or “-xane.” These ingredients give the skin and hair a smooth and shiny appearance. However, silicones can lead to unwanted side effects, such as clogging pores and triggering allergies or skin irritation. Another drawback of silicones is their lack of biodegradability, which makes them a burden on the environment.
Used in sunscreens and other products to allow for a clear finish. There are concerns about their ability to penetrate the skin and possibly enter the body, as well as about their environmental impact.

FAQ on Active-Ingredient Cosmetics
The benefits of active-ingredient cosmetics lie in their ability to specifically address particular skin needs and deliver visible, scientifically proven results. Active-ingredient cosmetics differ from conventional skincare in their use of highly concentrated active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, retinol, vitamin C, niacinamide, and peptides, which are known for their effective properties in promoting skin health and improvement. Here are some of the key benefits of active ingredient cosmetics:
1. Targeted treatment: Active ingredient cosmetics are designed to effectively treat specific skin concerns such as signs of aging, hyperpigmentation, blemishes, and dryness.
2. Scientifically grounded: Every active ingredient in active ingredient-based skincare is selected based on its proven efficacy and safety, supported by extensive scientific research.
3. Improved skin health: In addition to immediate improvements in skin appearance, the ingredients in active ingredient-based skincare also promote long-term skin health and resilience.
4. Highly concentrated formulations: Unlike conventional skincare products, which are often diluted with fillers, active-ingredient cosmetics offer potent formulations that require a smaller amount of product to deliver visible results.
5. Innovative Technologies: DOC BERGER EFFECT utilizes advanced technologies and delivery systems to enhance the deep penetration and bioavailability of the active ingredients.
6. Personalized Skincare: The wide variety of active ingredients in our active-ingredient cosmetics enables a customized skincare routine tailored to the skin’s individual needs and goals.

An Overview of Skin Types:
Using our active-ingredient skincare products is an investment in the long-term health and beauty of your skin. With regular use of our “Clean Beauty” and high-tech active-ingredient skincare products, you should realistically expect to see noticeable improvements within about 2–3 months.
The reason for this timeframe lies in the way our active-ingredient skincare works. Your skin needs some time to adapt to the lamellar cream structure and the highly effective ingredients, and to undergo the deep regenerative processes. Our active-ingredient skincare is designed to re-stimulate your skin’s own natural production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid—processes that are essential for healthy, youthful skin but do not happen overnight.
During this phase of adaptation and renewal, your skin absorbs the active ingredients in our skincare and begins to show visible changes. It’s important to remain patient during this time and use the active ingredient skincare consistently. After the recommended period of 2–3 months, you’ll notice that the positive effects of our active ingredient skincare are not only visible but also long-lasting. DOC BERGER EFFECT’s active ingredient skincare thus offers an effective and long-term solution for improved skin health.
The question of why active-ingredient cosmetics are generally more expensive than conventional cosmetic products can be answered in much the same way as the question of why a Porsche costs more than a Trabi. It comes down to the quality of the ingredients, the precision of the manufacturing process, and the ultimate goal: an exceptional result. Here are some factors that influence the price of active-ingredient cosmetics:
1. Highly concentrated active ingredients: Active-ingredient cosmetics contain highly concentrated, active ingredients in therapeutic doses that are supported by clinical studies. The sourcing and processing of these high-quality active ingredients—such as hyaluronic acid, Juvinity, retinol, or vitamin C—drive up production costs.
2. Research and Development: Active ingredient cosmetics are backed by extensive research and development aimed at creating the most effective formulations. Investment in scientific studies, innovative technologies, and patents to improve product performance and safety is reflected in the price.
3. Skin-Friendly Formulations Without Additives: Unlike conventional cosmetics, which often use inexpensive fillers and smaller amounts of active ingredients, active ingredient cosmetics rely on high-quality, pure formulations without unnecessary additives, which increases production costs.
4. Sustainable and Ethical Manufacturing: DOC.BERGER I EFFECT prioritizes sustainable and ethical production that protects the environment and promotes fair working conditions.
5. Improved skin health and visible results: Active-ingredient cosmetics not only offer short-term cosmetic improvements but also promote long-term skin health. Investing in high-quality products through consistent use can make expensive, invasive procedures or treatments unnecessary in the future.
6. Innovative packaging: To ensure the stability and effectiveness of the highly potent ingredients, our active-ingredient cosmetics use special tubes and vials that protect against light, air, and bacteria. The development and production of this packaging contribute to the overall cost.
The terms “natural” or “natural” in natural cosmetics often suggest a gentler and safer option, but this label does not necessarily guarantee greater effectiveness or safety for the skin.
Natural cosmetics may be known for their pure ingredients, but paradoxically, the risk of skin irritation and allergic reactions can actually be higher with natural components such as essential oils or plant extracts. This can be a significant drawback, especially for people with sensitive or dry skin.
The biggest sticking point with natural cosmetics is the question of effectiveness. While many natural ingredients are selected with good intentions, not all have had their effectiveness confirmed by thorough scientific research. Furthermore, the concentration of active ingredients in natural cosmetics can vary widely. Factors such as soil quality, climate changes, and the exact timing of the harvest influence the potency and purity of the natural ingredients, which can lead to inconsistencies in product performance.
In contrast, active-ingredient cosmetics are characterized by targeted, scientifically grounded development. High-tech active-ingredient cosmetics, such as those from DOC BERGER EFFECT, are based on comprehensive research and use precisely calibrated concentrations of pure and effective ingredients. Products are developed under controlled conditions to ensure consistent and predictable efficacy—a clear advantage over the variability of natural cosmetics. This scientific approach makes it possible to specifically address individual skin needs and achieve visible results that go beyond what can often be achieved with natural cosmetics.
