Facial Care for Impure Skin

Blemishes can occur with any skin type, whether oily, dry, sensitive, normal, or combination. Typical signs include pimples, blackheads, clogged pores, uneven-looking skin, and occasional redness.
Increased sebum production, a buildup of dead skin cells, and clogged pores often act together. Blemish-prone skin can also be dehydrated or sensitive. Good skincare for blemish-prone skin should therefore avoid harshly drying it out. Instead, it should cleanse the skin, help remove dead skin cell buildup, regulate excess sebum, and support the skin barrier.

Blemishes

Blemish-prone skin often shows pimples, blackheads, clogged pores, or occasional pustules. These signs can vary considerably and affect oily, dry, or sensitive skin.

Complexion

The complexion often looks less calm and less even. Redness or changes in pigmentation may also remain visible after blemishes have healed.

Pores

With blemish-prone skin, pores may look more visible or become clogged more quickly especially in areas with increased sebum production. Blackheads are particularly common in the T-zone or other areas prone to blemishes.

Unique characteristic

Blemish-prone skin needs targeted yet gentle care. Thorough cleansing, sebum-regulating ingredients, and enough moisture are especially important so the skin is not unnecessarily dried out or irritated.

What Causes Blemishes?

Blemished skin usually results from the interaction of several factors. The sebaceous glands often produce more sebum, while keratinized cells do not shed evenly from the skin’s surface. This can make pores more likely to become clogged, leading to blackheads, pimples, or pustules.

Blemishes are not a skin type in their own right. They can occur with oily and combination skin as well as dry, sensitive, or normal skin. Hormonal changes, stress, unsuitable skincare products, or overly aggressive cleansing can also affect the skin’s appearance.

Good skincare for blemished skin should therefore address several factors at once: regulate excess sebum, loosen keratinization, counteract clogged pores, and still provide the skin with sufficient hydration.

Active ingredients that are particularly relevant include salicylic acid, niacinamide, retinol and Azeloglicina®, which, depending on the formulation, can be incorporated specifically into a skincare routine for blemished skin.

What Is Blemish-Prone Skin?

Blemish-prone skin refers to a skin condition characterized by an increased occurrence of pimples, blackheads, clogged pores, or pustules. Unlike oily, dry, or sensitive skin, blemish-prone skin is not a distinct skin type in itself. Therefore, blemishes can occur with any skin type—even on dry or sensitive skin.

Blemish-prone skin can manifest in very different ways depending on the skin type. While oily skin often tends to exhibit excessive shine and visible pores, dry skin may develop isolated pimples or blackheads alongside a feeling of tightness and a lack of moisture.

It is therefore crucial to use a skincare routine for blemish-prone skin that does not simply dry out the skin, but instead combines cleansing, clarifying active ingredients, and a moisturizer tailored to the individual skin type.

If pimples, pustules, or other skin irregularities are severe, painful, or persistent, you should consult a dermatologist to determine whether a condition such as acne is present.

What Skincare Does Blemish-Prone Skin Need?

A good skincare routine for blemish-prone skin should cleanse thoroughly, counteract keratin buildup and clogged pores, balance sebum production, and provide sufficient hydration at the same time. It is important to always tailor skincare to the actual skin type: blemish-prone skin can also be oily, dry, sensitive, or dehydrated.

A complete skincare routine for blemish-prone skin can be structured as follows:

Morning:

  1. Cleansing: For normal, oily, or resilient blemish-prone skin, Foam Intense. For dry or sensitive skin, Foam Sensitive is the gentler alternative.
  2. Toner:Depending on your skin type, follow with Tonic Intense or, for dry and sensitive skin, Tonic Sensitive.
  3. Active-ingredient serums: In the morning, Vit C + Spilanthol Serum. If blemish-prone skin is also dehydrated, you can additionally use Hyper Hyaluron Serum can also be used.
  4. Eye care:The Lifting Eye Wonder specifically cares for the delicate eye area.
  5. Daytime care and sun protection:Complete the routine with Four Seasons Day Cream SPF 50+. High daily UV protection is particularly important when using retinol, fruit acids, or active ingredients for post-blemish marks.

Evening:

  1. Foam Intense or Foam Sensitive—according to your skin type.
  2. Tonic Intense or Tonic Sensitive.
  3. Purifying Power Serum:The Purifying Power Serum is the key evening serum for blemish-prone skin, clogged pores, excess sebum, and post-blemish marks.
  4. Retinol: If you are new to retinol or have more sensitive skin, start with Retinol Sensitive. More resilient skin already accustomed to retinoids can use Retinol Intense can be used.
  5. Night care:To finish, Time Machine night cream is suitable.

Additionally, once or twice a week:The Fruit Acid Peeling can complement the routine if well tolerated. Introduce it gradually and use it cautiously on sensitive or irritated skin.

Which Cleanser Is Suitable for Blemish-Prone Skin?

The facial cleansing for blemish-prone skin depends not only on pimples and blackheads, but also on the underlying skin type. Blemish-prone skin can be oily and resilient, but it can also be dry or sensitive.

For normal, oily, or resilient blemish-prone skin Foam Intense is suitable. Its formulation contains, among other ingredients, salicylic acid (BHA), niacinamide, and various fruit acids, and is particularly suitable for blackheads, clogged pores, keratin buildup, and oilier areas of skin. Then Tonic Intense can be used. DOC BERGER EFFECT

If blemish-prone skin is also dry, dehydrated, sensitive, or easily irritated, a gentler cleanser is often the better choice. Foam Sensitive cleanses gently without unnecessarily stripping dry skin. Then Tonic Sensitive is suitable as a gentler toner for dry and sensitive skin.

This creates two simple combinations:

  • normal, oily, or resilient blemish-prone skin: Foam Intense + Tonic Intense
  • dry, sensitive, or reactive blemish-prone skin: Foam Sensitive + Tonic Sensitive

Good cleansing for blemish-prone skin should be done morning and evening. Aggressive scrubbing, very hot water, or frequent heavy degreasing are not necessary and can place additional stress on dry or sensitive blemish-prone skin.

Which Serum Is Good for Blemish-Prone Skin?

A serum for blemish-prone skin should be selected according to the specific skin concern. For pimples, excess sebum, keratin buildup, post-blemish marks, and an uneven complexion, Purifying Power Serum is the key active-ingredient serum within the DOC BERGER EFFECT routine.

The formulation combines, among other ingredients, Azeloglicina®, niacinamide, and tranexamic acid. Azeloglicina®, or potassium azeloyl diglycinate, is particularly interesting for excess sebum and blemish-prone skin. Niacinamide additionally supports the skin barrier and a more balanced-looking complexion, while tranexamic acid is particularly relevant for uneven pigmentation and dark post-blemish marks. DOC BERGER EFFECT

If blemish-prone skin is also dehydrated, Hyper Hyaluron Serum can be used as an additional step.

For uneven skin tone and dark discoloration after blemishes, Vit C + Spilanthol Serum with 20% vitamin C, including the stabilized vitamin C derivative Et-VC®, is also suitable in the morning.

Which Cream Is Suitable for Blemish-Prone Skin?

There is no single cream for blemish-prone skin. What matters is that day and night care suit the underlying skin type and do not unnecessarily overload or dry out the skin.

In the morning, Four Seasons Day Cream SPF 50+ is suitable. High daily UV protection is particularly relevant for blemish-prone skin because UV radiation can make existing pigment changes and dark post-blemish marks more visible or visible for longer.

In the evening, Time Machine is suitable as the final night care for normal, blemish-prone, oily, or combination skin.

If blemish-prone skin is also persistently very dry, skincare should be tailored more strongly to the skin type. You can find further products under facial skincare for dry skin.

Which Active Ingredients Are Good for Blemish-Prone Skin?

For blemish-prone skin, active ingredients that loosen keratin buildup, improve the appearance of clogged pores, regulate excess sebum, and support a more even complexion are particularly relevant.

Salicylic acid (BHA) is oil-soluble and is therefore particularly suitable for clogged pores, blackheads, and oilier areas of skin.

Azeloglicina® combines an azelaic acid derivative with glycine and is used especially for blemish-prone skin, excess sebum, and an uneven complexion.

Niacinamide supports the skin barrier and is also very suitable for skin prone to blemishes and increased sebum production.

Retinol supports skin renewal and is particularly relevant for keratin buildup, uneven skin texture, and visible signs of skin aging.

Glycolic acid (AHA) primarily exfoliates the skin surface and can therefore contribute to a smoother, more even-looking complexion.

Tranexamic acid complements skincare especially when dark pigment changes remain after blemishes.

Which active ingredients are appropriate therefore depends on whether pimples, blackheads, clogged pores, oily shine, post-blemish marks, or dehydration are the main concern.

Does Retinol Help With Blemish-Prone Skin?

Retinol is an important active ingredient in skincare for blemish-prone skin, because it supports skin renewal and is particularly relevant for keratin buildup, uneven skin texture, and clogged pores.

For people new to retinol or with more sensitive skin, Retinol Sensitive is suitable. It allows a more cautious introduction to retinol skincare.

By contrast, Retinol Intense was developed for more resilient skin or skin already accustomed to retinol, and combines retinol with additional retinoids and bakuchiol.

Retinol is used in the evening and should be introduced gradually into the routine. Pause use if the skin is acutely irritated. During the day, consistent UV protection with Four Seasons Day Cream SPF 50+ is especially important.

Which Exfoliant Is Suitable for Blemish-Prone Skin, Blackheads, and Clogged Pores?

Chemical peels containing AHA and BHA can be a useful addition to a skincare routine for blemish-prone skin. While salicylic acid (BHA) is particularly relevant for blackheads and clogged pores because it is oil-soluble, glycolic acid (AHA) exfoliates more strongly at the skin surface.

Fruit Acid Peeling combines AHA and BHA and can be integrated into skincare for blemish-prone skin once or twice a week depending on skin tolerance.

It is important not to overload the skin. Peels, retinol, and other intensive active ingredients do not necessarily need to be used on the same evening. For dry, sensitive, or already irritated skin, build up use particularly cautiously.

Those specifically interested in clogged or visible pores can find further information in the article What can you do about large pores?.

Can Blemish-Prone Skin Also Be Dry or Sensitive?

Yes. Blemish-prone skin and dry skin are not mutually exclusive. Blemishes describe a skin condition, whereas dry, oily, normal, or combination skin describe the underlying skin type.

Therefore, skin can be prone to pimples and blackheads while still feeling dry, tight, or dehydrated. In this case, a routine focused solely on degreasing would be counterproductive.

For blemish-prone and simultaneously dry skin, choose cleansing particularly gently and supplement the routine with sufficient hydration. Hyper Hyaluron Serum can be used as an additional step, for example, if dehydration is the main concern.

For more pronounced dryness, it is also worth looking at facial skincare for dry skin. If the skin mainly reacts with burning, a feeling of tightness, or rapid irritation, you can find suitable products under facial skincare for sensitive skin.

What Helps With Post-Blemish Marks?

After pimples have healed, red or brown post-blemish marks can remain. These should be distinguished from true acne scars: post-blemish marks are flat color changes in the skin, whereas acne scars involve structural changes such as indentations or raised areas.

For dark post-blemish marks and uneven skin tone, Purifying Power Serum is particularly suitable. The formulation combines, among other ingredients, tranexamic acid, Azeloglicina® and niacinamide and is therefore suitable both for blemish-prone skin and for uneven pigmentation after healed blemishes.

In the morning, Vit C + Spilanthol Serum can complement the routine. Vitamin C has an antioxidant effect and supports a more even skin tone. The serum contains 20% vitamin C, including the stabilized vitamin C derivative Et-VC®.

Retinol is also relevant for post-blemish marks and an uneven complexion. Retinoids support skin renewal and are particularly suitable when keratin buildup, blemishes, or uneven skin texture are a focus alongside discoloration. Retinol Sensitive is suitable for beginners and more sensitive skin, while skin accustomed to retinoids can use Retinol Intense.

For post-blemish marks, dark spots, and the use of retinol or fruit acids, consistent UV protection is particularly important. Four Seasons Day Cream SPF 50+ should therefore be the final step in the skincare routine every morning.

By contrast, deeper indented, raised, or persistently structurally changed areas are more likely to be acne scars. Cosmetic skincare can support their appearance, but cannot completely remove deeper scars. You can find more information and suitable care in the treating scars collection.
