What causes dry skin, and at what age does it start to appear?
Dry skin is a common skin problem caused by various internal and external factors. It can occur at any age, but becomes more common as we get older. Here are the main causes and when they typically occur:
Natural Aging: As we age, the skin produces fewer natural oils and less moisture. The production of lipids, which strengthen the skin barrier, decreases. This causes the skin to lose moisture and become drier. Starting in one’s mid-20s, the skin may gradually become drier, and between the ages of 30 and 40, dryness may become more noticeable.
Climate Conditions: Cold weather, low humidity, and dry air can dry out the skin. Frequent use of heating in the winter can also lower humidity and make the skin drier.
Frequent washing and hot showers: Washing too often, especially with hot water, can strip the skin of its natural oils and contribute to dryness.
Inadequate skin care: Insufficient or inappropriate skin care can further dry out the skin. Using harsh cleansers and skipping moisturizers can make the skin drier.
Counteracting Dryness—How Does It Work?
There are various approaches to treating dry skin and maintaining its moisture:
Moisturizing Products:Using moisturizing skincare products is essential for keeping the skin hydrated. Effective active ingredients include:
- Hyaluronic acid:Binds moisture and helps keep the skin hydrated and plump.
- Glycerin:A highly moisturizing ingredient that draws water into the skin and makes it supple.
- Ceramides:Strengthen the skin barrier and prevent moisture loss.
- Shea butter:A rich moisturizer that nourishes and protects the skin.
- Collagen:Supports the skin's structure and promotes moisture retention.
- Urea:Binds moisture and improves the skin's ability to retain water.
- Tocopherol (Vitamin E):A powerful antioxidant that protects the skin from free radicals and reduces inflammation, while supporting the skin barrier and the healing process.
Gentle cleansing:Use mild cleansers that don't strip the skin of its natural oils. Avoid hot water and opt for lukewarm water when washing.
Apply moisturizer regularly:Apply moisturizer immediately after washing to lock in your skin's moisture.
Use a humidifier:A humidifier can increase indoor humidity and thus protect your skin from drying out.
Healthy Lifestyle:A balanced diet, drinking enough water, and not smoking can help keep your skin healthy and hydrated.
