Face Serum in a Medical Skincare Routine

A facial serum is an indispensable part of any effective skincare routine. These highly concentrated formulas are particularly lightweight and non-greasy, allowing them to absorb quickly into the skin without leaving any residue. They provide intensive care and nourish the skin with essential nutrients and antioxidants, making them an essential part of any skincare routine.

What is a facial serum, and how does it work?

A serum is a highly concentrated, intensive facial treatment that is applied after cleansing and before moisturizer. High-quality serums are characterized by their light, liquid texture, which allows the active ingredients to penetrate deep into the skin. The active ingredients in serums are particularly small and can be absorbed by the skin more effectively than the ingredients found in moisturizers.

How to Use a Facial Serum:

Apply the facial serum after cleansing your face with cleansing foam and facial toner, but before applying your day cream. The previous cleansing steps ensure that your skin is optimally prepared to absorb the serum’s highly concentrated active ingredients. A few drops of the serum are enough to care for your face and neck. Be sure to gently pat the serum into your skin so it absorbs better and can deliver maximum results.

Which facial serum is right for my skin?

Facial serums work by penetrating deep into the skin’s layers thanks to their lightweight texture. Once there, they can deliver their highly concentrated ingredients—such as vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, collagen, or retinol—directly to the cells. This leads to an immediate and long-lasting improvement in the skin’s appearance. Serums are particularly effective at combating skin concerns such as moisture loss, wrinkles, blemishes, dark spots, and other signs of aging.

At DOC BERGER EFFECT Medical Skincare, we offer a wide variety of serums that can be combined with one another depending on your skin's needs.

Hyper Hyaluron Serum

Ideal for: Dehydration, early fine lines (caused by dryness or facial expressions), dull skin

This hyaluronic acid serum intensely replenishes moisture reserves and provides a gentle firming effect. Hyaluronic acid in various molecular sizes deeply hydrates the skin. Acetyl hexapeptide-8 and SYN®-AKE further help smooth expression lines. Customers call it the “best serum for wrinkles.”

Thanks to the moisturizing serum's light, non-comedogenic texture, it is suitable for all skin types—from dry to oily.

Vitamin C + Spilanthol Serum

Ideal for: Pigment spots, expression lines, tired skin

This vitamin C facial serum combines antioxidant cell protection (20% vitamin C!) with plant-based "Biobotox" (spilanthol), derived from paracress. It protects against free radicals, can reduce dark spots, and has a relaxing effect on expression lines.

Perfect for anyone who wants radiance, an even complexion, and anti-aging benefits all in one serum.

Collagen Serum

Ideal for: mature, dry, or sensitive skin

The Collagen Serum from DOC BERGER EFFECT strengthens the skin’s structure and improves its elasticity and firmness. Native collagen has excellent moisture-binding properties, while MATRIXYL 3000 and amino acids support collagen production and strengthen the skin barrier. Centella rounds out this innovative moisturizing serum with its soothing effects. Customers call it the “best facial serum for dry skin.”

Platinum Elixir

Ideal for: wrinkle treatment and prevention, redness, and anti-aging

A high-end longevity serum with platinum as an anti-aging catalyst. CLARIVINE™ contains plant stem cells and signaling peptides to enhance the skin’s longevity.

This peptide serum smooths, soothes, moisturizes, and reduces redness—for maximum skin health and vitality.

Purifying Power Serum

Ideal for: blemished skin, enlarged pores, dark spots

This facial serum regulates sebum production and gently exfoliates dead skin cells. It also has anti-inflammatory and brightening properties. Tranexamic acid, niacinamide, and butylresorcinol help promote a more even complexion.

It is especially popular among teenagers or during times of hormonal changes, such as after pregnancy or menopause.

Retinol for Sensitive Skin

Ideal for: Those new to retinol, those with sensitive or dry skin who want to start using retinol

Facial serum with mild retinol and bakuchiol. Improves skin texture, pores, wrinkles, and dark spots over time.

A long-acting active ingredient that provides lasting structural improvement with high tolerability.

Retinol Intense

Ideal for: Advanced retinol users, more pronounced wrinkles, enlarged pores, and dark spots

Facial serum with a high concentration of retinol, supplemented with additional phytoretinols and retinoids. Stimulates collagen production, promotes cell renewal, and evens out skin imperfections.

A powerful retinol serum for maximum anti-aging benefits.

Does the facial serum replace my day or night cream?

Serums are highly potent anti-aging products with an exceptionally high concentration of active ingredients. Even a small amount is enough to provide targeted and intensive care for the skin.

However, serums are not a substitute for day or night creams. They complement your skincare routine and should always be used in combination with a cream that locks in the active ingredients and strengthens the skin barrier.

The combination of facial serum and cream optimizes the effectiveness of the skincare routine and ensures that the skin receives long-term, sustained care.

How much time should elapse between applying the serum and the cream?

After applying a facial serum, you should wait about 30 to 60 seconds before applying your day or night cream.

A serum has a light, fast-absorbing texture and can penetrate the skin quickly. The cream applied afterward “seals in” the active ingredients, strengthens the skin barrier, and maximizes effectiveness.

How often should you use a facial serum?

Most facial serums can be applied in the morning and at night.

Active ingredients such as vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and collagen are ideal for your morning routine due to their antioxidant and smoothing properties, while retinol serums are best used in the evening. Specialized serums for treating blemishes or dark spots should also be applied exclusively in the evening. Regular use is key—only then can anti-aging serums deliver visible, long-term results.

How long does it take for a serum to take effect?

That depends on the active ingredient.

Moisturizing serums containing hyaluronic acid or collagen often produce an immediate plumping effect. “Botox-like” active ingredients such as spilanthol or acetyl hexapeptide-8 also work relatively quickly (within a few days).  Antioxidant serums with vitamin C can help boost radiance within a few weeks. Retinol or peptide serums generally require at least 12 weeks to achieve visible improvements in wrinkles and skin texture.

Regular, long-term use is key.

At what age should you start using a facial serum?

A facial serum can be beneficial even during the teenage years—especially for blemish-prone skin. Serums containing antibacterial and sebum-regulating ingredients help balance sebum production, reduce inflammation, and clear up the complexion.

An anti-aging serum may be recommended starting in your mid-20s, as natural collagen production begins to slowly decline at that point. Antioxidant serums are ideal for early prevention of photoaging.

More intensive anti-aging facial serums containing retinol or peptides are often used starting at age 30—depending on the individual’s skin condition and not solely on their biological age. The key factor is always the skin’s actual needs.

Which serum works best against wrinkles?

The best anti-wrinkle serum combines highly effective anti-aging ingredients that both reduce existing wrinkles and prevent new ones from forming. Particularly effective are serums containing spilanthol (Bio-Botox), Argireline® serums, or SYN®-AKE serums, which relieve micro-tension and have been proven to reduce wrinkle depth. DOC BERGER EFFECT facial serums, such as the Vit C + Spilanthol Serum (Bio-Botox Serum), can visibly reduce wrinkles and make the skin appear smoother.

What is the best facial serum for dry skin?

The best facial serum for dry skin should provide intense hydration while also strengthening the skin barrier. Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, collagen, aloe vera, and NMFs (Natural Moisturizing Factors). People with dry skin often have elevated TEWL (transepidermal water loss). This means the skin loses too much moisture through the barrier. A good hydrating serum should therefore not only deliver moisture but also reduce moisture loss over the long term.

Which serum is best for blemish-prone skin?

For blemish-prone skin, a facial serum with sebum-regulating and anti-inflammatory ingredients is recommended. Serums containing retinol, niacinamide, green tea, and azelaic acid are particularly effective. It’s important to follow a consistent serum routine without over-treating the skin.

Which serum is best for achieving an even skin tone?

A serum designed to even out skin tone should specifically target hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and dull skin. Facial serums containing high doses of vitamin C or niacinamide, as well as those containing tranexamic acid or azelaic acid, are particularly effective. With regular use of the facial serum and daily sunscreen, the appearance of pigment spots can be visibly reduced.

Should men use a facial serum?

Yes—men’s skin also benefits from a high-quality facial serum. Men’s skin is generally thicker, oilier, and more frequently exposed to UV rays. A DOC BERGER EFFECT facial serum can specifically help prevent wrinkles, refine pores, and moisturize the skin. Anti-aging ingredients such as vitamin C, peptides, and retinol are effective regardless of gender.

What is the difference between an anti-aging facial serum and a longevity serum?

An anti-aging facial serum is primarily designed to reduce visible signs of aging, such as wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and age spots. The focus is on visibly improving the skin's texture.

A longevity serum takes it a step further: It focuses on maintaining skin health over the long term. Instead of just smoothing out wrinkles, it supports cell regeneration, protects against oxidative stress, and helps slow down the aging process as early as possible.

In short:
Anti-aging visibly corrects—longevity takes a preventive, long-term approach. It’s best to use both anti-aging serums and longevity serums.

INCORPORATING A FACE SERUM INTO YOUR DAILY SKIN CARE ROUTINE

Incorporating a facial serum into your daily skincare routine is a crucial step toward getting the most out of your skincare regimen, especially when used in combination with other high-quality products from DOC.BERGER | EFFECT.

1. Cleaning with DOC.BERGER | EFFECT cleaning foams:

Start your skincare routine with one of our cleansing foams, such as "Foam Intense" or "Foam Sensitive." These facial cleansing foams gently and effectively cleanse your face by removing makeup residue, dead skin cells, and environmental impurities.

2. Toning with a facial toner:

After cleansing, use one of our facial toners, such as "Tonic Intense" or "Tonic Sensitive," to restore your skin's optimal pH balance and prepare it to absorb the active ingredients in the facial serum.

3. Applying the facial serum:

After double cleansing, apply a few drops of the facial serum to the palm of your hand and spread it evenly over your face. Gently pat the facial serum into your skin until it is fully absorbed. This helps stimulate blood circulation and improve the absorption of the active ingredients. Tip: You can also combine several facial serums.

4. Day and night care with the Anti-Pollution Day Cream and the Night Creams:

After applying the facial serum, apply the Anti-Pollution Day Cream to protect your skin from environmental stressors during the day. In the evening, use one of our night care products instead, which will deeply nourish and regenerate your skin. These moisturizers help lock in moisture and enhance the effects of the facial serum.

By incorporating these steps into your daily skincare routine, you’ll enjoy comprehensive care. Your skin will not only be cleansed, toned, and moisturized, but also protected from environmental stressors, nourished, and regenerated overnight. The result is firm, hydrated, and radiant skin—trust the high-quality facial serum from DOC.BERGER | EFFECT.
